Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to produce engineering components or products by metal machining operations such as cutting, grinding, milling and turning.
It requires the ability to define component specifications from work instructions and technical drawings, determining the required machine operations, planning and sequencing the machining tasks.The unit applies to a person working at entry level in the manufacturing, and engineering industries undertaking a range of well-defined machining tasks.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • Plan, sequence the tasks and produce engineering components or products to meet job specifications which includes setting up and operating at least three (3) different types of machines.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic eLearning system.
