Skills and job centres

Skills and Jobs Centres are part of a state-wide Government initiative to provide prospective students and employers with free advice on training, job opportunities and links to other services available to help improve skills, careers and the workforce.

The centres can be a starting point for:

  • prospective students looking to begin training
  • workers needing to reskill
  • unemployed workers needing support for retraining and work placement and
  • employers looking to upskill their workforce or assist with vacancies.

Victoria University Polytechnic has Skills and Jobs Centres set up at Sunshine, Melton and MetroWest in Footscray. The Sunshine location is a specialist centre for automotive workers transitioning to new lines of work.

Services available to the community

These centres provide prospective polytechnic (TAFE) students and the wider community with access to a number of services including:

  • skills assessment
  • knowledge of in demand skills
  • meeting with local employers
  • careers’ advice and counselling
  • information on potential jobs and relevant training courses
  • talks and seminars presented by community groups and employers
  • workshops to improve your skills and learn about employment opportunities
  • referrals to support services such as: careers and employment, education and training, welfare, financial guidance including superannuation, disability

You can also see careers at Victoria University, which include vacancies, internships and help with applying for work.

Funding for government-subsidised study

Eligibility for funding in 2016 has changed, so you may now be eligible for a government-subsidised place. As a Victorian TAFE provider, Victoria University Polytechnic is now able to offer government-subsidised funding to eligible students commencing their studies in 2016.

Now is the ideal time to review your professional development needs. VET courses can help you specialise, up-skill or re-skill and improve your chances of landing your dream job.

Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT)

Under the Government's Automotive Transition Plan, LIFT has been developed to support the communities most affected by the impending closure of major car manufacturing in Victoria (Melbourne's North, West, South-East and Geelong region). LIFT aims to create new sustainable jobs and contribute to the economic development of these communities. Grants of up to $2 million are available to support capital investment by businesses located, or looking to locate in the Local Government Areas.
