Wyndham Tech School (WTS) is upping the game in the west of Melbourne through the establishment of a professional esports arena. Designed to expose partner schools and students to the billion-dollar industry of esports and gaming, the new arena is the first of its kind in Victoria.

With the total interactive gaming and eSports revenue in Australia expected to reach A$4.9 billion in 2025, the gaming industry is flagged as a one of our fastest growing sectors. The brand-new esports arena at WTS will engage students in esports entrepreneurship, game development, cybersecurity and more and have them participate in interschool esports competitions and events.

Industry partner BIG Esports has created a 10-week program to be delivered out of this engaging and interactive space. The collaboration has made sure students gain hands on experience and skills used by industry professionals such as entrepreneurship, technical capability, team building & leadership through games, esports, IT & content creation. Founder and CEO Chris Smith sees massive opportunity in Australia within the sector, and is excited to be partnered with WTS to give students the practical experience they need to set them up for success.

BIG Esports has seen exponential growth in the industry in Australia over the past 12 years. We now have a solid structure of funded professional esports teams, leagues, events and supporting companies, with strong support from a passionate gaming community, big Australian brands, and various Governments (state and local). The esports industry follows the videogame market in its massive growth, which means there is a hunger and a gap for more professionals to enter the workforce.

As an employer in the space, gone are the days of a regular certificate or degree in marketing. Graduates need to have hands-on industry experience to stand out from the rest and thrive in positions. We’re here to make that happen and are proud to have partnered with Wyndham Tech School to make it a reality.

34 government and non-government schools in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay will have access to the facilities, already four schools are locked in to undertake the program in 2022. Partner school Thomas Carr College has been part of our pilot and Principal Craig Holmes is looking forward to the opportunities, access to such technology and the skills provided to students.

At Thomas Carr College our vision is to encourage our students to become global citizens. New and emerging technologies provide an opportunity to connect, up-skill and broaden the frontiers for our students in partnership with WTS and their industry connectivity.

His sentiment is echoed by WTS Director Gail Bray.

WTS is incredibly excited to partner with Big Esports and Thomas Carr College to provide something unique in Wyndham that is also first of its kind in Victoria. The exposure to skills and technology that will ignite creativity in students inspires them to think about careers they may have never heard of or thought possible to obtain, both nationally and globally.
