Design solutions from Hatch Studio MetroWest

14 November 2019

Brimbank Council engaged Hatch Studio MetroWest to design a logo for their new action group, Impact Brimbank, which aims to improve community members’ health and wellbeing.

After an informative briefing in the studio with the members of the group, Hatch started researching and brainstorming the art direction that would represent the group and its message. After a three-stage design process, Hatch delivered a successful outcome chosen from eight initial concepts.

The successful design was created by a Diploma of Graphic Design student Jackson Coates, who is currently completing his work experience in the studio.

This type of industry experience is instrumental in VU Polytechnic students' success. The aim is to provide students with an avenue to experience professional procedures and practices of an industry-based studio, by allowing them to produce industry-based work in a studio environment.

About Hatch Studio MetroWest

VU’s Hatch Studio MetroWest is making a significant contribution to industry and community inclusion in the learning arena, primarily through activities that involve students, industry and staff and external partners in real projects.

The Hatch Studio is open on weekdays from 9am to 5pm and is run by design educator Beata Cranswick, alongside graphic design students and occasionally digital media and visual arts students, when projects require their skills.

A rotating roster of students assists in the everyday running of the studio, including duties such as quoting and invoicing, through to creative design and finished art for all jobs. All work is developed as per the brief set by the client, and is run with deadlines and parameters as set in the industry.

By taking students out of the classroom and allowing them to work on industry set jobs, the Studio not only offers an avenue for students to expand and diversify their learning environment and experience, but also connects them with learning in the workplace and community.

What this means for you is that, at any time, you can come in and brief Hatch on your design job, and VU Polytechnic students will produce your work within a short timeframe at reduced rates.
