Associate Teacher Program

Investing in our future workforce

Victoria University Polytechnic’s Associate Teacher Program prepares industry-experienced individuals to become effective teachers. You'll learn how to demonstrate your real-world knowledge and expertise in the classroom, and contribute to the development of the future workforce.

The 20-week Initial Intensive (II) program is designed to prepare you for your first two years of teaching at Victoria University Polytechnic. On successful completion of the course, you'll attain the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) .

Intensive induction

The program has initial and ongoing induction sessions. You'll take part in the following:

  • meeting with key staff in the University and Polytechnic for regular support services and assistance
  • training on all of our systems and processes
  • studying our Professional Learning Series based on teaching and learning in a vocational education setting.

Topics include:

  • blended learning
  • mental health awareness
  • teaching in the workplace
  • problem-based learning
  • diversity and inclusion.

Coaching/mentors & support

To help you thrive in a career that can be challenging, you'll be appointed a personal mentor/coach. We'll also provide a comprehensive network to support your professional development and successful completion of the program – and help you to maintain your health and wellbeing.

With this support, you'll continue to develop your teaching and learning throughout the program. You'll also have access to Victoria University’s broader staff networks and programs.

Community of Practice

All Associates with be part of our 'Community of Practice' (COP).

Communities of Practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.

The dual professional

We recognise your dual expertise: in industry knowledge, and vocational education skills. This program encourages you to share your current industry expertise, so that we can create courses that reflect employer expectations.

You'll provide advice based on your experience, and the experience of your industry colleagues, to help us create an environment of continuous improvement and genuine industry connection.

Real classroom & learning environment exposure

The 20-week intensive program consists of one day per week where you'll be in the classroom or learning environment with other experienced educators. You'll get to observe a variety of teaching settings and practices across a range of industry areas, as well as your own area of expertise.

Ongoing support for associates

On successful completion of the 20-week program, you'll be part of Victoria University Polytechnic’s teaching department in the role of a fulltime educator. We'll continue to provide support through mentoring and coaching. You'll receive regular feedback and continued opportunities to undertake professional learning.
