What is the Associate TAFE Teacher Program?

The Associate TAFE Teacher Program is a unique two and a half year program with an initial 20-week Intensive component designed to prepare participants for their first two years of teaching at Victoria University Polytechnic.

Associates will attain the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116). Upon successful completion of this program, successful associates will be converted to two-year teaching contract at the Polytechnic. 

Intensive induction

The program has purpose induction sessions and an ongoing professional development program. You will be exposed to key external and internal stakeholders, and meet with senior staff in the University for regular support and assistance. You will undertake training that gives you the skills and knowledge to use our systems and processes. You will also participate in a tailored Professional Learning Series based on teaching and learning in a vocational education setting.

Coaching/mentors & support

To help you thrive in a rewarding career that can also challenging, you'll be appointed a personal mentor/coach to guide and support you throughout the program. Your mentor will be part of a comprehensive network that supports your professional development and successful completion of the program and transition into being a VU Polytechnic TAFE Teacher.

You will continue to develop your teaching, learning, assessment and leadership skills throughout the program, preparing you with the knowledge to lead and connect with future students.

Community of Practice

All Associates with be part of our 'Community of Practice' (COP). Communities of Practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.

The dual professional

All vocational educators need to be experts in their industry field as well as experts in vocational education and training. The program will give you the opportunity to share your current industry skills, knowledge and expertise to ensure our courses reflect the expectations of the employers of our students. You will provide knowledge from your industry experience and use that to inform our education offer to ensure it is current and relevant to industry.

  • Accounting
  • Aged care and disability support 
  • Building and construction
  • Carpentry
  • Community services (mental health, alcohol and other drugs, youth work)
  • Cybersecurity
  • Early childhood education
  • Electrotechnology (electricians)
  • Library services
  • Nursing
  • Plumbing

You are eligible to apply for the program if you have three or more years’ of working experience.

Real classroom & learning environment exposure

The unique program starts off with a 20-week Intensive Induction where you'll be in the classroom or learning environment with other experienced educators. You'll get to observe a variety of teaching settings and practices across a range of industry areas, as well as your own area of expertise. This is a full time (five days per week) commitment.

Ongoing support for associates

On successful completion of the 20-week program, you'll be part of Victoria University Polytechnic’s teaching department in the role of a fulltime educator. We'll continue to provide support through mentoring and coaching. You'll receive regular feedback and continued opportunities to undertake professional learning.

Program start dates and location

The program will commence on 7 November 2019.

Associates will have the opportunity to experience working in all our campuses:

  • City West (CBD) – Flinders and King Street Campuses
  • Inner West - Footscray, Sunshine, St Albans Campuses
  • Outer West – Werribee Campuses
